The “I can beat the other guy” Campaign Ploy

Posted on: March 31, 2016

Lately I’ve heard several GOP candidates say in so many words, “vote for me because I can beat the ‘other guy,’ and then I can beat Hillary,” with Hillary being the presumed nominee of the Democratic Party, which lately doesn’t appear to be a complete lock now that Bernie Sanders has trounced Hillary in a number of very large states.

One of the problems with that approach, that “I can beat the other guy” is that it totally takes the focus off of the issues and instead puts the focus on the race itself. That approach exchanges matters of importance, the issues, for somewhat superficial ones, the race itself. Yes, of course winning the race is important. But let’s not sacrifice what so many are fighting for at a time when so much is at stake.
